Partnering Opportunities
Successful Beginnings An Annual Campaign
This is a program where dreams materialize and new lives are
created. This is a program about Wendy, Karen, Rosemary. Its
about LaToyyia, Bola, Linda and their kids. Its about
women, men, children and families who deal with the daily
struggles, but sometimes the grind gets tougher and they need
a boost to get back on track to focus on building a life they
can be proud of.
AWEE recently launched its Successful Beginnings
annual giving campaign in 2003 to shift our funding reliance
away from public sources and to increase awareness and support
from the corporate, foundation and individual donor communities.
Today, with the continued leadership and support of founder
Jeanne Lind Herberger, AWEE and its board of directors are
committed to further her efforts through a significant shift
in funding from reliance on public support to 80% private
support. Currently, the organizations budget is $1.4
million with a reliance on public funds of about 42 percent,
and 58 percent private contributions.
There is a growing demand for our services
- often the only lifeboat for many in our community struggling
to stay afloat. Our goal is to add, enhance and collaborate
on programs that will serve more women and families. At the
most basic level, your support of Successful Beginnings will
create economic independence and well-being through the dignity
of work. The exponential results will create confident, capable
individuals who are integral to successful families; assist
in the effort to allow children to grow up, stay in school
and go on to college; support a larger taxpayer base that
supports the viability of the community; keep families together
and off welfare rolls; and make dreams come true.

AWEE Classes
Nearly 40 classes are offered on an ongoing basis to AWEE
participants in the areas of personal development, family
well-being, job search skills, job retention skills and financial
literacy. Classes can be one day or multiple weeks in length.
AWEE serves between 550 and 1,400 each year through its courses
delivered at a number of sites throughout Maricopa and Yavapai
Counties. It is this training that ultimately provides a step
up for those wanting to move off welfare or are thrust into
the work world to support their families because of tough
and tragic times.
The costs incurred by AWEE to put a client
through a full course-load are approximately $2,600. AWEE
participants pay no fees.
AWEEs proprietary curriculum qualifies
participants for community college credits up to nine
hours if all sessions are completed successfully. These quality
classes are highly sought-after within the community and often
delivered, upon request, to a number of other non-profit and
private/public companies. Workshop instructors are professionally
trained specializing in adult learning and are certified to
teach AWEEs curricula.

Scholarships
AWEE participants face a variety of challenges. That they
have in common. But they also have the keen desire to make
it, get a break, take a step forward. They know through AWEE,
the key ingredient to that is education. AWEE supports as
many as 100 people a year with scholarships to community college
or qualified vocational training programs. The Scholarship
program allows individuals to pursue degrees they may have
never dreamed of with the hope of launching a career to compete
effectively in the work world.
Education links have been made with nearly
every major education institution in the area Arizona
State University, Maricopa Community Colleges, Maricopa Skill
Center and others. Training and education opportunities are
also provided for truck driving, nurse certification and other
specific trades. AWEE even helps its participants purchase
the nursing uniforms required for their certification.

Clothing Bank
AWEE manages two Career Clothing Banks, one in central Phoenix,
the second in Prescott. Donations are received daily from
individuals or employers who manage clothing drives for the
program. Program participants may choose from a large selection
of donated professional clothing items to help them feel well
prepared for job interviews and other career activities. The
Clothing Bank has scheduled hours and also serves participants
through appointments.

Classroom/Computer Class
When a person struggling to make it would rather do windows
than wash windows, AWEE steps in to provide the computer training
needed to survive in todays professional work world.
To provide the extraordinary training and skills needed by
our participants, AWEE must sustain several computer classrooms,
service the hardware and software, as well as ramp up to meet
the growing needs of a larger client base.
More and more jobs will require computer literacy
and AWEE is working to close the gap to allow more women to
make a smooth transition into jobs with such requirements.
Currently, AWEE assists participants with learning computer
skills by incorporating the use of computers in job search
skills workshops. They learn to prep cover letters and resumes
on computers, receive training for job searches on-line, and
get acquainted with checking e-mail for job search responses.
Additionally, AWEE connects participants with available training
programs so they can advance their computer literacy or become
certified in a particular type of technology field. A partnership
with South Mountain Community College integrates basic computer
skill courses into AWEEs ongoing workshop services.
These courses are taught by AWEE instructors and participants
will earn community college credit upon completion of the
course.
