Personal Development Skills Courses*

  Subject Area Course Description
1. Making Changes Happen Evaluate your current personal and professional status and prepare to make changes for future success. By understand the importance of internal and external control, participants will learn to define success for their life and the goals to achieve it.
2. Personal Values… Past, Present and Future Identify important met or unmet values/motivators/needs through reflection of the past - both at work and in your personal life. Visualization is used to begin looking to the future in relation to living these values and how to stay committed to living important values.
3. Identifying and Accessing Community Resources Identify what impedes your effectiveness in the workplace, then find out what kind of resources and services are available to advance your knowledge and effectiveness towards career advancement.
4. Appreciating Diversity Learn to develop sensitivity and empathy for differences among people to work together effectively. You will reflect on personal influences from your past, explore feelings of being “different” and then recognize the myriad of similarities among all people.
5. Managing Stress-Is it Possible? Through defining stress and discussing personal factors in life that cause stress, you will discover effective methods of dealing with life's daily challenges.
6. Enhancing Listening and Speaking Skills Become a better listener and more confident speaker. By using proven methods from the Toastmaster’s International model, you will build skills that will make you more effective in daily workplace interactions.
7. Time Management Increase awareness of individual time wasters, misconceptions about time management and problems that affect time usage. Create an individual plan for more effective time management.
8. Work Habits that Build Successful Careers Discover the importance of a strong work ethic and meeting employer expectations. Understand customers, the evolving dynamic of teamwork and clear communication that contributes to successful work experiences.
9. Decisions, Decisions! (How to Handle the Tough Ones) Decision making patterns will be explained and you will identify your most common patterns. Through the course, you will learn how harmful or helpful these patterns can be and how they may have affected your past decision making ability. Ultimately, you will learn which patterns work and which need modification to help you succeed.
10. Effective Problem Solving Learn how to differentiate between decision making and problem solving. Review how fears, worries, procrastination and negative thinking can hinder effective problem solving.
11. Goal Setting for Results Learn how to set goals that will get you results in your personal life and career.

 

Family Well-Being Series

  Subject Area Course Description
1. Parenting Skills Learn tips and techniques for creating and sustaining positive communication, reinforcement and defining consequences for your toddler, school-aged and teens.
2. Healthy Families Learn to identify and deal effectively with family stress as a normal part of life and in relation to the workplace. Ideal for individuals who have experienced family violence in the past.
3. Balancing Work and Family Life Review effective methods to assist in setting appropriate boundaries with family members and coworkers.
4. Parenting Issues that Impact Effectiveness in the Workplace Explore the effect that parenting can have on job retention and gain tools to assist in designing additional support structures for you as a working parent.
5. Identifying and Addressing Family Violence Understand how to identify victim characteristics and the affects on children. Learn the resources available for victims and their families.
6. Family Budget Management Explore a variety of issues related to money management and financial planning. Develop financial goals to become a more effective money manager and living within your current income level.

 

Career Preparation Courses*

1. Setting Direction for Your Career Identify personal abilities and strengths and develop a meaningful path for your career.
2. Exploring Careers Explore various industries and non-traditional occupations for women to determine your interest in potentially new and exciting work environments and job types.
3. The Resume: Making a Good Impression on Paper Develop an impressive resume that promotes personal strengths and can be used for multiple career opportunities.
4. Answering the Most Difficult (and most common) Interview Question Develop a personal statement to the most frequently asked interview question - "tell me about yourself?"
5. Responding to Job Openings Simplify the application process by completing a master application to use as reference whenever you apply for a job. Introduction to using the Internet in the job search process is also included.
6. Making a Good Impression with Letters, In Person and on the Phone First impressions last!! Learn key strategies for creating a positive first impression in cover letters, telephone inquiries, and introductions.
7. Successful Interviewing Techniques

Secure the job you want by excelling through the interview process - from the initial phone call to the critical post-interview steps.

8. Conducting a Successful Job Search Employment can be found through formal and informal means. Networking is one of the most powerful tools in the job search process. Learn to recognize how, why and with whom to network, as well as how to organize a job/career search.
9. Turning Job- Hunting Negatives into Positives Develop strategies for meeting job-hunting difficulties head-on so that mistakes and/or rejections are turned into learning experiences.
10. Celebrating Success and Preparing for Future Career Steps (Workshop Review/
Graduation)
Prepare a portfolio containing all finished products from the workshop series (i.e., master application, resume, cover letter samples, assessment information, verbal resume, job search planning tool, etc.) and celebrate a successful completion of the Career Preparation Workshop Series. Certificate of Completion included.

 

On the Job Success and Job Retention Skills

  Subject Area Course Description
1. Dealing Effectively with Conflict at the Workplace Learn a five-step process focused on win-win approaches for dealing with any workplace conflict you may encounter.
2. Assertive Communication The difference between aggressive, assertive and passive communication styles are explored and practiced, with emphasis on modeling of assertive behavior in the workplace.
3. Vision for the Future What you dream can be achieved! Take hold of your destiny by creating a career plan that takes you from "just a job" to a fulfilling career.

Dollars and Sense: Financial Education Workshops

  Subject Area Course Description
1. Foundations to Money Management Explore your thoughts, attitudes and behaviors concerning spending and saving as well as learning basic finance terminology.
2. Arizona Saves Join a guest speaker from program partner, Arizona Saves, to learn how you can access financial education, wealth coaching and free savings products. This workshop is particularly for low to moderate income households and youth.
3. What is an IDA? Become an expert on Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) and how your regular deposits from earned income can be matched with both public and private sources to achieve financial goals for advanced education, starting a business and homeownership. (Presented by program partner, Assets for Arizona Institute.)
4. Caring for Your Money: An Introduction to Financial Institutions Review your past experience with financial institutions to develop a better understanding of how keeping your money in a financial institution - banks and credit unions - can be beneficial. Through research, you will gain the knowledge to find the right financial institution and account for your needs.
5. Keep it Safe By the end of this course, you will be familiar with your rights as a banking consumer. Specifically, you will be able to identify the laws that protect you, avoid scams, protect your identity and resolve complaints regarding your bank accounts or financial institution.
6. To Your Credit
A good credit history is vital to your future purchasing abilities. You will learn how to order and read a credit report, identify ways to start repairing credit and recognize credit repair scams.
7. Loan to Own There are a number of options for borrowing money. Become familiar with the the variety of consumer installment loans and determine the right consumer installment loan for your needs.

 

Climbing Ladders, Achieving Success and Stability (CLASS)
(Personal and Leadership Development)

  Subject Area Course Description
1. A Mission for Life Develop a mission statement to guide your life - both personally and professionally.
2. Building a Career and Financial Plan Develop a career map and review the values, skills and impact you want to make with your life. Also develop a financial plan that builds on your career plan.
3. Taking Charge of Change Assess your reactions to change and explore whether behavioral changes are needed to achieve professional and personal goals.
4. Connecting with Community Discover where you can lend a helping hand. Working within your community fills many needs. On a social level through belonging or affiliation and on a person level through satisfaction in giving, helping and learning.
5. Setting yourself Apart- with CLASS Develop social interaction skills that will build confidence and capacity in your career, community and social situations. Learn about the lasting impact of self-presentation and how to develop and use a network of contacts.
6. Individual Participant Activity Visit a community group and move out of your comfort zone as you experience the importance of sharing viewpoints to influence change.
7. Sustaining a Powerful Life This is the AWEE CLASS Series final session and an opportunity for you to synthesize the various concepts and experiences of all six previous sessions. Through review, you will make a renewed commitment to achieving the career, social and community goals that will support your life mission.

 

Computer Skills Courses are not currently being offered.

  Subject Area Course Description
1. Beginning Keyboarding Learn keyboarding basics – from the correct position of body in the work area to using peripheral microcomputer equipment, such as a printer, proofreading and verifying both on screen and printed materials and documents.
2. Microsoft Office Suites Learn how to use a word processor and Windows to create and manage files. Topics include tables, graphics,e-mail, electronic scheduling and integrating all the features on a daily basis.
3. Introduction to the Internet Learn common uses of the Internet - concepts of culture, ethics, and privacy as they relate to the Internet; procedures and requirements for connecting to the Internet; key technologies used by the Internet; and communication services available on the Internet.
